The word “modern” generally denotes that which is new, but Solomon wrote, “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun” (Eccl. 19). What we call “modern” are simply old things in new clothes. That is the case with the degeneracy of our “modern” society.
In Romans 1:18-32 Paul catalogued sins that men practiced when they departed from God, cast Him out of their knowledge, and sank to the lowest moral depths in the ancient world. Among those was the practice of sodomy:
For this cause (knowing God, failing to glorify Him, and rejecting knowledge of Him, Rom. 1:21-24, JCB) God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of error which was meet” (Rom. 1:26-27).
The pronouncement of Joseph Biden that sodomy is a “civil right” is not modern. It is as ancient as the crowd which gathered at Lot’s door, demanding sexual access to the three male guests in his house (Gen. 19:4-5). Nor is “same sex marriage” (a misnomer) modern. It too is as ancient as the world Paul described in Romans 1. The “modern” sodomite agenda, which is intent upon imposing approval of that vile lifestyle upon our society, is not modern at all. It is a revival of the ancient sin of Sodom—a city which would have been spared God’s wrath had there been at least 10 righteous persons dwelling therein (Gen. 18:32-33).
The inroads that this perversion is making on our society today is remarkable. In 19th century Britain, sodomy was punishable by death. In most states of the U. S. it was forbidden by law in years past, until a perverted U.S. Supreme Court said those prohibitions were “unconstitutional”. Decent people throughout the civilized world have historically recoiled in disgust at its practice, shunned to describe it, and ostracized sodomites as “queers”. One of those was Adam Clarke. In his commentary on Genesis 19:5, he wrote,
This account justifies the character given of this depraved people in the preceding chapter, ver. 20, and in chap. xiii. 13. As their crime was the deepest disgrace to human nature, so it is too bad to be described; in the sacred text it is sufficiently marked; and the iniquity which, from these most abominable wretches, has been called Sodomy, is punished in our country with death (A Commentary And Critical Notes, The Old Testament, Vol. I, Genesis To Deuteronomy, Abingdon Press, New York and Nashville, nd).
So far as sodomy is concerned, there is no difference between the ancient world that Paul described in Romans 1, and today’s American society. Not only is sodomy widely, openly, and flagrantly practiced, and celebrated today, as it was in Sodom, but even those who do not practice it are unwilling to condemn it as it is in God’s word. Saturated with postmodern poison, and conditioned to “call evil good, and good evil,” (Isa. 5:20), much of American society now aids and abets this perversion.
That was illustrated by a FaceBook post a few years ago. Two sodomites, dressed in suits and ties were pictured together, “celebrating” 14 years of their “union” and, sadly, at least two persons said they “liked” that post. One was from the teenage niece of one of the men and the other was from a man who is a friend of the teenager’s uncle. Neither “like” came from a sodomite, but both gladly indicated their approval of that unholy “union.” They are what was once known as “Fellow Travelers”. In the 1950s, a “Fellow Traveler” was an American who was not a Communist, but who was sympathetic to Communist ideology. Joseph Stalin actually called them, “Useful Idiots.” That aptly describes those today who do not practice sodomy, but voice their approval of those who do. The “Fellow Travelers” of sodomites are also condemned by Paul in his catalogue of sins in the ancient world: “…who, knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them [emph, JCB)] (Rom. 1:32).
No, sodomites have not introduced a modern concept. There is no new thing under the sun. Their degeneracy is not “modern,” but ancient. The physical consequences associated with that lifestyle are deadly and, unrepented of, their degeneracy will lead to an even worse fate—eternal damnation in the world to come.
