Imagine this, if you will. You have just purchased a new Lexus automobile and you are showing it off to a close friend. You point out the beautiful detail work of the chrome trim, the lovely tires, the Corinthians leather seats, a digital clock and power windows, etc. You tell them that it cost around $50,000. Your friend then asks, “What company made this car?” Without a moment hesitation you say, “Nobody, there was an explosion in a junk yard, and this car just happened!” Your friend looks at you with much concern and suggests you might need to see a doctor.
The third word of the Bible is “God” and we are told that God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1-2). The apostle Paul writes: “For by Him (God-JLW) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist” (Col. 1:16-17). The universe and planet earth and all contained therein are infinitely more complex than any automobile ever made. Yet, hundreds of thousands of people are asking us to believe that it all just happened by sheer accident. Our universe contains more than 2,500,000 galaxies! There are in excess of 25 sextillion stars (that is the number 25 followed by 21 zeroes). Our Milky Way is over 100,000 light years in diameter. Light travels 670,616,629 Miles Per Hour. The nearest galaxy to us is the Andromeda Galaxy, which is over 750,000 light years away! We are asked to believe that this immense universe just accidentally happened. Folks, I was born at night, but not last night. If you know what I mean.
The sun which heats planet earth is c. 92,955,807 miles away. If the sun were just 10 percent closer the earth would have burned up multiplied centuries ago, and if we were 10 percent further removed from the sun, the earth would be frozen solid in a matter of minutes. How was that distance between the two determined? Earth is hurtling through space at a speed of 66,600 MPH or 19 miles per second. The distance to the moon is c. 239,000 miles. If the earth could head directly to the moon, the trip would take about 3½ hours.
Our solar system travels through space at over c. 450,000 MPH in an orbit that takes an estimated 220,000,000 years to complete just one cycle. Earth’s atmosphere contains 21 percent oxygen. If that level was lowered to 10 percent, every man and beast would die almost instantaneously. It takes a really irrational person to have the audacity and nerve to say “Well, all of this just happened by circumstance!”
“Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also” (Gen. 1:16). That is what we call the sun and the moon. “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained” (Psa. 8:3). “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth forth His handiwork” (Psa. 19:1). “By the word of Jehovah, the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth…God spake, and it was done, He commanded and it stood fast” (Psa. 33:6,9). David was speaking the truth when he wrote: “The fool hath said in his heart, ‘There is no God’…” (Psa. 14:1).
