Two Generals on Sodomy in the Military

Jerry C. Brewer

In March, 2007, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Pace, said, “I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts. I do not believe the United States is well served by a policy that says it’s okay to be immoral in any way.” His remarks, of course, brought down the ire of the sodomite lobby, the liberal media, and government officials upon General Pace.

In March, 1778, 229 years before General Pace made his remarks, another American General, George Washington, wrote the following in his “General Orders” from the headquarters of his ragged Continental Army at Valley Forge, where my fourth Great Grandfather was serving:

Head Quarters, V. Forge

Saturday, March 14, 1778

At a General Court Martial whereof Col. Tupper was President (10th March 1778) Lieut. Enslin of Col. Malcolm’s Regiment was tried for committing sodomy (emph. in the original), with John Monhort a soldier; Secondly, For Perjury in swearing to false Accounts, found guilty of the charges exhibited against him, being breaches of 5th Article 18th Section of the Articles of War and do sentence him to be dismiss’d the service with Infamy. His Excellency the Commander in Chief approves the sentence and with Abhorrence and Detestation of such Infamous Crimes orders Lieut. Enslin to be drummed out of Camp tomorrow morning by all the Drummers and Fifers in the Army never to return; The Drummers and Fifers to attend on the Grand Parade at Guard mounting for that purpose (The Writings of George Washington From The Original Manuscript Sources, John C. Fitzpatrick, Ed.).

Worthy of note is the Biblical term “sodomy” used by General Washington. He did not use the euphemism of “gay” or even “homosexual.” He used the Bible term for such perversion. The Lieutenant was “drummed” out of the service in shame “never to return.” What a difference a little more than two centuries have made! In 1778, the Army called perversion what it was and dismissed one guilty of it. Today, it is allowed and celebrated in the highest offices of government and, like those who brought the wrath of God upon their cities (Gen. 19), sodomites are allowed free rein in the military. “How long, O, Lord?”
