Methodism’s Inconsistency

Marvin L. Weir

The policy of the United Methodist church is to accept sodomite and lesbian members but then reject the practice of homosexuality as “incompatible with Christian teaching.” The information in this article comes from an AP story entitled, “Pa. Pastor Expects To Be Defrocked For Gay Wedding” (OneNewsNow, Spring City, PA).

The pastor was convicted of breaking church law for officiating at his son’s same-sex wedding. According to fellow pastors, he must bring himself to adhere to the laws of the church’s Book of Discipline.

The pastor tells his jury that he is unrepentant and then states:

The church needs to stop judging people based on their sexual orientation. We have to stop the hate speech. We have to stop treating them as second-class Christians…I feel I have to be an advocate, an out-spoken advocate…for all lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual people.

What is abundantly clear is that this “pastor” does not want to be an outspoken advocate for the Lord and His Word! This should be no surprise as he has for years been involved in a man-made church and following a man-made creed—The Book of Discipline. The inconsistency—how can the Methodist church accept people into their fellowship and consider them members of the church and then admit their practice is “incompatible with Christian teaching?” The answer—they abide by what they deem to be right and not by what the Bible says is right!

Many today are enamored with the pastor’s plea: “The church must stop judging people based on their sexual orientation.” Accepting such nonsense makes Jesus’ condemnation of fornication rather foolish.
